Call For Papers
Computational Culture, a journal of software studies
Deadline: 30th March 2012
The new peer-reviewed open access journal Computational Culture has
been launched. The first issue entitled ‘A Million Gadget Minds’ is
available online at: http://computationalculture.net/
The journal’s primary aim is to examine the ways in which software
undergirds and formulates contemporary life. Computational processes
and systems not only enable contemporary forms of work and play and
the management of emotional life but also drive the unfolding of new
events that constitute political, social and ontological domains.
In order to understand digital objects - such as corporate software,
search engines, medical databases – and their constitutive role in
culture, or to enquire into the use of mobile phones, social networks,
dating, games, financial systems or political crises, a detailed
analysis of software cannot be avoided. A developing form of literacy
is required that matches an understanding of computational processes
with those traditionally bound within the arts, humanities, and social
sciences but also in more informal or practical modes of knowledge
such as hacking and art.
Computational Culture is now inviting contributions for the second
issue. We seek articles, book, project and software reviews, and also
indications of interest for future special issues focusing on
databases and social media.
Please submit a completed paper by the deadline of 30th of March or
contact the editors via the website to express an interest.
Editorial group,

Would be good if some of us would be at LGM this year to make connections, report?
I'll probably be there before heading over to Madrid. Anyone else?

Press release #1: Libre Graphics Meeting 2012 in Vienna, Austria
Release Date: January 25, 2012
Hacking & Creativity @ LGM 7
May 2-5, 2012 – UAS Technikum Wien – Programmers of free and open
source graphic software, artists and users from around the world are
headed to Vienna for the 7th annual Libre Graphics Meeting in May. The
Libre Graphics Meeting is the annual gathering for users and developers
of free and open source graphic software: artistic tools that are free
for anyone to use and modify. LGM gives software developers, artists,
designers and other creative professionals the opportunity to
collaborate, share their work and learn from each other in a lively
event.
A Preview
Every year, Libre Graphics Meeting focuses on individual and group
interaction, emphasizing free media and the software that produces it.
This year’s attendees can expect a similar format that will include
hacking sessions, meetings, workshops, presentations, demonstrations,
and birds-of-a-feather (BOF) sessions. Leading up to the conference,
special lab sessions bring developers and artists face-to-face to make
improvements in creative software. Gaps can form when developers and
their users don’t meet face to face; LGM gives artists and educators a
voice in the building of their tools. Both content creators and
developers will present, bringing a diverse community together to
advance the technologies and strategies of high-quality free creative
software.
Submit a talk!
LGM’s strength comes from the presenters who talk about their work and
inspire others by sharing their experiences, techniques, and best
practices. Whether you are a developer, an artist, or an enthusiast,
you can be a part of this year’s event by sharing your story and your
work.
The LGM community wants to hear your proposal for a session:

Dear all,
Glad to know that many of you will be in Brussels next month: http://lgru.pad.constantvzw.org:8000/42
The program for the upcoming meeting is more or less complete -- an intense but I hope a productive week: http://lgru.net/archives/276
Attached is a more detailed schedule that I'll publish as soon as all contributions are confirmed.
If you want to propose a presentation for the Kitchentable sessions on Wednesday 22 February, please let me know!
Also ... the lgru.net site has changed :-) There are still a few details to fix but the site now pulls in RSS-feeds from blogs and sites on your servers that are related to LGRU. It is easy to add new feeds; you can do it yourself or send me a link so I can do it. Microblogging could work too?
best,
Femke
January 30th
Finally a moment of meeting with you for 9000 km of drawings, tools,
stories.
Interested in the /libre/? Curious about our practice? OSP studio
welcomes you for a first public session at Variable partly available online.

*Exiled Cuisine* (Ivan Monroy Lopez, Mexico City)
Lecture/performance + dinner.
Cookbook files are open when there’s a chance of working. The work is
not technological in that nothing of this has not been done before. The
literature that feeds into this has been contentionally written in the
shall we say mmh street. The public space of technical forums is related
in some way to network protocols. It could be good that these HTML files
be exported into cookbooks. I don’t like it when these books are sold. A
standard regime of the kitchen is easier for the exiled to understand.

Hello!
All the best for 2012 and I am much looking forward to work together in the coming year :-)
Here in Brussels we are preparing the next research meeting (22-25 February). As you know, the theme will be Co-position, or digital tools for arranging texts and other graphic elements in two, three or four dimensional space. We propose to approach this theme from three angles: visual versioning, collision and vocabulary. For each of these angles we are preparing a hopefully thought provoking morning program plus a prototyping session in the afternoon.
I have attached a preliminary program so you can get an idea of how the days will unfold; please let me know if you think we should add or change things. The final program will be ready by the end of this month. On this page http://lgru.pad.constantvzw.org:8000/39 you can find some notes. We are counting on ca. 45 participants and want to make sure there are a few places for external contributors. Participation will be free of charge and includes meals but participants will need to inscribe.
As we realise our budget is not entirely in balance with our ambitions ;-) it is extra important that we book flights as soon as we can. Could you please let Donatella donatella(a)constantvzw.org know as soon as possible which days you want to travel?
Hope to hear soon,
Femke
